Melioidosis (Whitmore’s disease) is a potentially fatal infectious disease caused by the bacteria Burkholderia Pseudomallei. B. pseudomallei is a bacteria found in the soil and water of tropical regions such as South-East Asia and Northern Australia. This disease is often hard to detect due to its varying symptoms depending on the site of infection, often getting misdiagnosed as pneumonia, influenza, and sepsis, hence the alias “The Mimicker”. People with immune-suppressing conditions as well as chronic diseases such as diabetes, liver, or lung disease are more susceptible to contracting Whitmore’s disease.
